Egypt started out as more of a site-seeing end to our trip, and quickly turned into a very educational and eye-opening experience. We visited a school for children that had been forced to flee there home country of Sudan due to war and ethnic cleansing. These refugees are not overly welcome in the already over populated Cairo, and are often not granted any sort of recognition that would allow them into the school system.
The "school" is an apartment building that is rented by wonderful contributors (Canadians and other ex-pats), and has been converted into make-shift classrooms. Some of the classes we visited would have 20-30 kids in what used to be an apartment bedroom. The teachers are educated adults that will sometimes work for weeks and weeks without pay.
The children seemed happy here, and we were greeted with MASSIVE smiles and warmth. One of the biggest benefits of this school, is that it highly decreases the chance of these kids getting into drugs, prostitution, and gangs. We have an amazing Canadian contact in Cairo who is supporting the school currently, and is our liaison for others that want to help out. You can help by funding lunches, by helping to buy books and pencils, or even to buy things for the kids to play in the yard with at lunch time.
