Myself and a very good friend of mine, Videographer Zac Whyte (www.zactv.com), went to the Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda to film a small documentary, and research a pilot project started by a fellow Vancouver Island Businessman 7 years ago. This project started with the donation of 30 South African dairy goats to a village of about 400 people, along with professional instructions on how to take great care of the goats, and make sure there were more and more goats being produced every year. The villagers, which you will see in the pictures, have been using the goats as a form of income (selling excess goats and milk), and of course for meat and milk for themselves.
My role in this venture was to breakdown the workings of the goat program, and see if the structure, which is based on massive accountability and community ownership, could be duplicated in other villages around the country.
Our findings included a number of challenges, as well as some amazing insights as to how such a small effort on the part of one or two people can result in such a PROFOUND benefit for hundreds of others. Along with the goats, honeybees and donkeys have also been contributed to help this village to become self-sufficient.
